8We want you to know, brothers and sisters,* about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; 2for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, 4begging us earnestly for the privilege* of sharing in this ministry to the saints 5and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, 6so that we might urge Titus that, as he had already made a beginning, so he should also complete this generous undertaking* among you. 7Now as you excel in everythingin faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you*so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.*
8 I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. 9For you know the generous act* of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

1 Alleluia.
Praise the Lord, O my soul:
while I live will I praise the Lord; ♦︎
as long as I have any being,
I will sing praises to my God.
2 Put not your trust in princes,
nor in any human power, ♦︎
for there is no help in them.
3 When their breath goes forth, they return to the earth; ♦︎
on that day all their thoughts perish.
4 Happy are those who have the God of Jacob for their help, ♦︎
whose hope is in the Lord their God;
5 Who made heaven and earth,
the sea and all that is in them; ♦︎
who keeps his promise for ever;
6 Who gives justice to those that suffer wrong ♦︎
and bread to those who hunger.
7 The Lord looses those that are bound; ♦︎
the Lord opens the eyes of the blind;
8 The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; ♦︎
the Lord loves the righteous;
9 The Lord watches over the stranger in the land;
he upholds the orphan and widow; ♦︎
but the way of the wicked he turns upside down.
10 The Lord shall reign for ever, ♦︎
your God, O Zion, throughout all generations.
Alleluia.

43 You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers and sisters,* what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
